Born and raised in the New York suburbs in the seventies, Dar says she grew up on classical, folk-rock and disco music. Early on, she became interested in stories and the way they were told. She aspired to be a playwright, but in 1991, she left one medium for another, immersing herself in the Cambridge folk scene of open mics and tip jar gigs. She started touring under in 1994 and has toured prolifically both nationally and internationally ever since. Selling nearly a million albums to date, she has been named one the most influential singer-songwriters of her time by Rolling Stone, Spin, and Paste magazines.
